Pregnant convicted drug trafficker Samantha Orobator, 20, from the United Kingdom passes two armed Laotian guards at Wattay International Airport in Vientiane, the Lao People's Democratic Republic, 06 August 2009, as she boards the plane to leave Laos to fly back to serve her sentence in the United Kingdom. Orobator was sentenced in June to life in prison after pleading guilty to drug trafficking. Police said they found 1.5 pounds (680 grams) of heroin in 68 capsules on Orobator’s body when she was arrested at Vientiane airport on her way to Australia. Orobator's sentence was commuted to life from the death sentence because she was pregnant. The high-profile case prompted Laos and Britain to push through a prison transfer agreement on May 7, and later sign a memorandum of understanding to speed up the process to get Orobator out of Laos before she enters the eighth month of her pregnancy |
