They suck. We hate them. I spent a day trying to get mine to hold a consistant
group and gave up. It's clean sitting in the box back in the armory next
to the rest of my sniper team's SPRs. They hate them, too.

Wow, what an excellent question. It's hard to believe I once said those
things considering how I feel about the Mk 12 now. A lot has happened since
then, too.
Let's re-hash. When those guns first showed up in 2003 it was part of an
Army initiated program. There had been a lot of back-biting going on between
the different SOF units who tested the proto-types concerning barrel length
and such. When we first got the weapons we didn't have any 77 grain 5.56mm
ammo for training, either It was all being sent overseas. So, we doped them
in with green-tip. Or, at least we tried. No one in my unit could get their
Mk 12 to zero with the green-tip. It would group a little and then be all
over the place. We couldn't be sure what was causing the inconsistancy. We
snipers conferred with other SEAL snipers and found that they were experiencing
similar problems. Some thought it was the Leupold scope, while others thought
the suppressor might be the culprit. We had training to do in preparation
for deployment and ran out of time dickering with the Mk 12's and just had
to move on. Some guys turned theirs in for good, others like me, just cleaned
them and packed them away.
I ended up taking mine to the warzone and one day when I had some time I
zeroed it with 77 grain 5.56mm and couldn't believe how accurate it was.
So was it a bad lot of green-tip that we had before when we shot them in
the States? I don't know. But the gun was really working now. I still had
some lingering doubts about it's long term reliability, though, from my
previous experience with the gun. At that time I was starting to warm up
to it. I carried both a 10" upper M4 and a broken down Mk 11 (in a backpack)on
a mission later on and was severely injured during a big shootout on that
mission and medevaced back to the States. I thought about that mission and
realized that if I'd had more bonding time to trust in my Mk 12's reliability
before that mission I probably would have just taken that instead of two
guns.
When I was well enough to get back in the saddle again I used my Mk 12 in
almost every scenario during my last work-up where I would have previously
used a Mk 11. Now, it requires more marksmanship skill at the longer distances
to wing a 5.56mm bullet out there where a 7.62mm bullet isn't pushed around
by the wind as much, and you need to hold yourself to a tighter "bowling
pin" as far as bullet placement on the target to assume a "kill" shot. But
it's pretty doable. The end result was that I was so impressed with my Mk
12 that I built my own to train with and used my issue Mk 12 almost exclusively
last year back in the warzone.
The Mk 12 is light enough to quickly index close targets ( although I wish
the barrel was a little lighter). I was able to shoot it out with badguys
from 25 meters to over 900 meters in a big battle. Many terrorists died
during that battle (several fell to the two Mk 12's fielded by my teammate
and I ). We on the other hand, were just fine. So, I'd have to say my trust
for the weapon system grows even more. All of my shots were suppressed,
BTW.
I think a lot can be said for how a weapon is introduced to the end user.
This was a rather poor example of how not to drop a gun on a warrior's lap,
without the correct ammo, and then fail to address the deficiencies found
when fielded in a timely manner.
In short, this gun went from being my least favorite rifle to my most favorite
rifle. How do you like that?
