Following two serious incidents involving BB guns this week, Surrey Police is introducing a service to collect and safely dispose of BB and replica guns. As part of a four-week campaign, officers have been informing people about the similarities between replica and real weapons and warning about the dangers faced by carrying these items in public. People who are concerned about owning a BB gun – or parents who do not want their children to have one anymore – can now arrange for it to be safely collected and destroyed by Surrey Police. Inspector Paul Pearson of the Tactical Firearms Unit explained: “Since we launched the campaign, we have received calls from people who were unaware of just how realistic BB guns can be. For example, parents who had given these items as toys now realise they could put their child in real danger. “In response, we’re launching a service so that people who are worried can arrange for an officer to visit their house, collect the weapon and ensure it is destroyed. This task will be carried out by trained firearms officers between operational taskings, so although they may not be able to get to you straight away, this is definitely the safest way to get rid of unwanted items.” Owning a BB or replica gun is not illegal, however carrying them in public could put you in the firing line of armed police. Since the campaign launched last week, armed response vehicles have already been sent to deal with two serious incidents where BB guns were mistaken for real weapons. At around 1:45pm on Tuesday 24 April, a teenager was seen with a handgun in Redhill town centre. Armed response officers and the police helicopter were sent to intervene. When the helicopter arrived, the youth pointed the gun towards the sky. Armed officers confronted the boy, who dropped the gun and ran from officers. He was caught and the weapon was found to be BB gun. The boy, a 15-year-old from Worthing, was charged with possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear or distress and has been remanded in custody to appear at Reigate Youth Court on Wednesday 2 May. A 15-year-old boy from Redhill, who was present during the incident, was also arrested and has been bailed pending further enquiries. In the early hours of Saturday 28 April, armed police received another call, this time to the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford. During a consultation in A&E, a doctor spotted the handle of a black handgun in a patient’s pocket. Hospital staff discretely evacuated the area and stopped all new admissions. When armed officers arrived the man had fallen asleep in a cubicle. They approached him and found a realistic BB gun inside his coat pocket. The man – unemployed Paul Scott, aged 42 from Guildford – was awoken and arrested for possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear or distress. He was charged and bailed to Guildford Magistrates Court on Monday 14 May. Inspector Paul Pearson said: “As these incidents show, people cannot tell the difference between real and replica guns, so we take all reported sightings of firearms very seriously, as do the courts. I ask people – is using a BB gun really worth the risk of scaring innocent people, being challenged by armed officers, getting a criminal record and possibly even losing your life? If not, let us know so we can collect your unwanted BB and replica guns.” People with unwanted items should call Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222. Details will be taken and collection will be arranged when an officer is available and you are at home. Guns could be subject to forensics and intelligence checks before being destroyed. Call 0845 125 2222 for all non-emergency policing matters. Call 999 if you have a genuine emergency requiring the attendance of the police (eg a crime is in progress or someone is in immediate danger). Call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you have information about crime and don't want to leave your name.
