Radio star
Marconi has been selected by the UK Ministry of Defence to supply its Personal Role Radio (PRR) for use by front line troops.
Working with Davies Industrial Communications in York, UK, the company has fought off competition from 10 other bidders over the last year. The win was completed after the system underwent extensive field trials by the Army.
Acquired by Marconi in June, Davies already had a close relationship with the users, and its audio ancillaries are employed by special forces around the world. Marconi combined these strengths with its own modern commercial radio technology.
Small and lightweight, Marconi's H4855 PRR provides robust and cost-effective short-range communication in military environments, with little opportunity for interception or detection.
Minimising the use of interconnecting cables, the radio does not require any other communications infrastructure and can be operated with a wireless remote button attached to a weapon. This means users can concentrate on their primary tasks without worrying about the radio. The PRR requires no support in the field other than the replacement or recharging of batteries.
Worth around ?8 million, the contract will create or sustain 85 jobs, mostly at Marconi's Chelmsford factory. The company will deliver 600 units throughout 2001, followed by 2,000 a month during 2002 and 2003.
Business Development Manager Alan Heritage says of the success: 揟he winning of the Bowman Personal Role Radio contract is the result of the lateral and forward thinking approach of the team. They quickly recognised the users' needs and the potential of wireless LAN technology in an unconventional environment. We are delighted with our success and look forward to promoting the product globally.?P Align=Justify> |
